Our History

The North Columbia Community Enrichment Foundation, formerly known as The James M. Hinton Community Development Foundation doing business as The James M. Hinton Foundation, was established by Second Calvary Baptist Church. The Foundation was incorporated in 2003 as a part of the Church’s plans to enhance its community outreach when the church relocated from Bull Street in Downtown Columbia (29201) to its current location on Mason Road in the North Columbia area (29203). The Foundation was initially named after Reverend James Miles Hinton (1897-1970) businessman, civil rights pioneer and Pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church from 1960-1970.

The Foundation became active in 2013 and launched its first program in 2014. It is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service and registered as a public charity with the SC Secretary of State. While the foundation collaborates with Second Calvary Baptist Church on many projects, it operates independently of the church and is governed by a its own board of directors.

In 2022, the Foundation changed its name to the North Columbia Community Enrichment Foundation to better reflect what it does and who it serves. The name was changed based on input received from stakeholders as a part of strategic planning.
